Extending NetGear Range

Greetings, I have a small wireless issue and I'm hoping tome of the
collective experience here can help me out.

I curretnly have Cable and a cable modem connected to a Netgear WGR614
Wireless Router, in the basement/family room on the south side of my home.

The college age kids (home for the summer) are only getting "yellow" to
"red"
reception one floor up and on the north side of the house. I thought I could
buy a
repeater, but after reading many of the compatibility stories over on
Amazon.com
of the Netgear Wireless Access point, it may not be the answer. Seems this
is an
area where model to model compatibility is an issue.

I have a number of empty wireless ports on the back of the existing router,
I am wondering
if I couldn't plug in a CAT5 cable that was 25 feet long and run it over to
the north side
of the house and just plug in another WGR614 Access point? Seems like that
might work?

Any thoughts or experience on that?

This should work ... you may need to think about the IP addressing ... will
each WAP have a separate DHCP range? I seem to remember my systems had an
overall address space of 10.1.0.1 - 10.1.0.255 , and each DHCP domain had a
subset within that ...

Perhaps it would be easier to relocate the existing WAP .. mine is currently
right behind me so the signal to my machine is probably too high (if such is
possible) whereas other parts of the house are less well served .. I could
(I think) move the WAP closer to those areas without reducing my own signal
too much.

Or alternatively you could just try moving the WAP antenna .. (not familiar
with the 614... would it take an external antenna .. possibly higher gain
and closer to the weak signal area?

OR even try using pringle / soup can reflectors ... see other threads ... to
beam the signal more into the weak area..

That sounds like the right approach. Use the same SSID on the AP, but use a
different channel.

Ron Bandes, CCNP, CTT+, etc.
