I have Windows 2003 R2 Standard DC server SP2
when I ping one work station I get a external ip address
The workstations are all Windows XP Pro SP3

All but one bring back the correct results.

My server ip is 192.168.10.10

My workstations are 192.168.10.100 thru 190

My router has 192.168.10.1 lan external 72.68.22.248

When I ping WS1 I get 192.168.10.100 responce this is good

When I ping WS2 I get 72.68.22.248 this is not correct

I have WINS, DNS DHCP running on the server.

from ws2 i can ping the server by name no problem

I tried to restart pc several time no luck

I even tried ipconfig /flushdns it failed with
could not flush the dns resolver cache function failed durning excution

Any ideas or suggestions

It was working this happens every now and again it seems to happen after we
do a restart after updates or software install

I notice this when I do a browse of my network neighorhood this pc does not
show in the list

Thanks

Tom

You have rouge entries in either DNS or in WINS. Clean out entries
pertaining to that WS and IP#,...it doesn't matter if the IP# is correct or
not,...remove any entry pertaining in any way to the effected machine and
reboot the WS so it re-registeres itself.

Then /flushDNS on the machine you are pinging "from".

Phillip

Thanks for the input. I checked both Wins and DNS

And they look clean and have only valid records

I will do a /flushdns on the server later I have some updates to apply which
require a restart would be a good time to flush

Thanks

Tom

Ok, sounds good.

I've had the same thing happen before. Cleaning up DNS and WINS took care
of it for me.
