Hello all, I'm having a problem with browser or exploring my network places
in a server 2003, win xp enviroment. I have two 2003 servers. S1 is the PDC
with DNS and WINS, S2 is the BDC with DHCP, DNS and WINS pointing to S1. All
client machines point to S2 for DNS. Here's the problem. Our users go
through my computer and explore the entire network, then windows network,
click on the domain name and find the servers and pull the data down or put
up that way. Don't ask me why, I've even mapped drives for them that they
don't use. Anyways, over the last week or two, I've a couple of problems
with users not being able to browse the domain to get to the servers. Any
help on this would be great.

Thanks,

Without more information it would be hard to advise. How many
subnets? What exact error do the users receive when attempting
to browse? Check the system log of the event veiwer on the problem
clients and the DCs then post any browse related errors.

I have I guess one subnet, 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.7.254 with the subnet being
255.255.248.0. Hope that helps with the subnet question.

The exact error when any user is trying to browse the domain is "domainname
is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available." I have domain admin rights and my xp PC is joined to the domain.

The other thing that is strainge is that if I'm on S1 I can browse the
domain and see all the PC's on the domain, however, if I'm on S2 I can't
browse the domain. I've looked through the event viewer on my box and
everything is in the green.

Thanks for the reply and any help.

What about the event logs on the servers? They are the machines running
the browser service (I hope).

I suggest you run the browstat utility (from the support tools on the
server CD) and see what your browser service is doing. The output is a bit
confusing if you haven't used it before, but it does tell you what is going
on. This should give you an indication of where the problem is. You
certainly should be able to see a browse list from either server. One server
should be the master browser and the other a backup browser.

Yet you have not other connectivity problems from S2 e.g.,
map drives? Sounds like the necessary browse packets on
the server are being blocked possibly. From S1 does S2
show up in the browse list?
