Last weekend the Internet Explorer on my Windows Server 2003 quit its normal
job. Trying to open a http-page end in the banner (top right) waving but no
other action, no "Opening..." message, no change, no error, nothing. Peace.
If I try to open a https-page, it works fine. ftp also works. Just http not.
IIS on this machine also works, so it is specifically only in the Explorer.

So I installed Firefox, works fine also for http. Reinstalled via repair the
server, put up SP1, still no change. Got IEAK and installed a customized
version, no change. Checked newsgroups, all help pages in MS kwowledge base,
such as Winsocks (checks out okay), no luck. I have too much running on the
machine to do a full erase/reinstall just for the fun of it...

Auto update is enabled, all patches in. Disabled all plugins, no change.
BTW, problem exists for all users on this machine, so it's not my cookies or
so.

Would appreciate any ideas what else I could check or do to get the this
working again. Thanks lot!
Hendrik

Check proxy server settings in IE Properties (Connections tab > Advanced).
Are you using the same proxy server for HTTP as you are for "Secure"
(https)? You could have a non-existent proxy server for HTTP. Such as a
left-over setting from an anti-spyware program.

Thanks for the response, but...
Proxy settings are cleared, tried that as well. Tried to set to my ISP's
proxy and to direct, back and forth, for all protocosl, no change. And
problem exists for all users, so without a policy it would be strange as
well.

Any other ideas? Thanks!

It's in the HKLM registry somewhere on these computers. Scan thru all
IE-related keys.

Todd,
checked, no proxy entries in the registry. Simply no connection for http.

Guess this one really is challenging creativity...

Do these machine have the old Proxy server Winsock proxy client installed on
them, or the ISA server firewall client by any chance? Check under Control
Panel for that.

No proxy shown anywhere in the control panel, unless it's very well hidden
somewhere. The "Windows Firewall" entry is showing, but I cannot open it, as
"ipnat.sys" is busy, which I assume is because of the fact that I only have 1
network card (firewall provided externally on the router). And since I can
browse find anything but http and http works with Firefox, NAT seems to be
not a problem.

I by now reran the full SP1 installation (Windows Server and SBS etc.),
reinstalled all protocols etc. on the network card, went through the whole
installation tasklist, all to no avail. Any other ideas?? Thanks for the
effort!

IE is very much tied into the OS, good, bad or indifferent. It's
unfortunate that IE cannot be un-installed. At this point, perhaps wiping
the machine clean and starting over again is looking like a possibility?

That's what I feared... Well, I went for the smaller version of this and did
a system state restore from a recent backup. Left the system unbootable
(message about some kernel DLL missing), so I did another installation with
repair option, after which my internet access is restored!

Now I just have another problem as the service packs for SBS2003 SP2 won't
install anymore, but I'll post on this in another group.

Thanks for your help!
