Explorer Causing Problem When Connected Through Router

This is an odd problem and I will try and be brief.

I bought a simple Linksys 4 Port router and connected
everything just fine. Two computers are connected to the
router. The laptop running 98 is running just fine, but
the Desktop running ME is having some kind of conflict or
hang with Explorer when running through the router.

If I have the desktop running from on the router it just
stalls and when I do a Ctl Alt Dlt it says "Explorer(not
responding)". I can shut down Explorer and things will
loosen up and I can actually surf briefly, but Explorer
continues to try and launch and bog down the computer.

I have replaced the PCI NIC and it did not help. It seems
to be a conflict between the router and Explorer...not
Internet Explorer. I can REMOVE the desktop running ME
frmo the router and connect it directly to the cable modem
and the computer runs fine. Linksys has pretty much proven
that this is not an issue with the router and said it
appears to be a Microsoft issue.

Please help if you can...thank you.

Hello;
Allow me, to explain what I perceive to be your equipment
connection. You are trying to set up a LAN(Local Area
Network) comprised of the following: A DSL modem connected
to the internet via the customary wall connection. A
Lynksy-4 port router, is connected, via a cable to the DSL
modem. You have one Win ME machine, and one Win 98 Laptop
connected to the router, via cables. Right? Looks OK to me!
If so, then Internet Explorer is not your problem.
Are you using the correct cables? All cables should
be "direct connect cables" none should be "cross connect
cables". Cross connected cables will not work in your set
up.
Assuming the cables are OK, let us know how you went about
setting up the LAN using your computers. Did you get any
error mesages? Post back what you find, etc.

Melvin,
I have the same peoblem with nearly identical setup. The
only difference is that my laptop in on Winows 2000 and it
is connected to the router by wireless. The following is
the text of my post from about a month ago. Thanks.

"I have a Dell Desktop running Windows ME and a laptop
running Windows 2000. I recently installed a Linksys
wireless router with the laptop wireless and the desktop
connected to the router by cable. The laptop works fine
whether I connect it wireless or directly with a cable.
The desktop works fine if it is directly connected to the
DSL modem but not when it is networked through the
router. The problem is that Windows Explorer stops
responding and the computer tries to access the "A"
drive. It you do CTL-ALT-DEL and stop Windows Explorer,
it willusually start working again. If you continually
use the computer it will work fine but if you leave it
unused for ten minutes or so, Explorer will lock up. Also
if you boot up with the network card connected to the
router, it will lock up immediately. If you boot up with
the network cable disconnected and connect it after you
have booted up,it will work. I have run a complete scan
with a brand new copy of Norton Antivirus, I have run
Scandisk and have defragged the hard drive. The hard
drive defragging seemed to help but has not eliminated the
problem. I would appreciate any help. Thanks."
