I replaced my wired Linksys cable router with a wireless on (WRT54G)
and put a WMP54G PCI card in my system in the other bedroom. The wire
that previously connected them was a 50 footer and had a lot of extra
length. The point to point distance of the 2 computers is about 25
feet.

On big files transfers between systems, I'm getting 6-8 Mbps, a far
cry from 54 Mbps. I have tried all the channels and moved the antenna
around on the PCI card. I can get as low as 2 Mbps.

I have a laptop with a Belkin 802.11B PC card that's almost as fast at
max and never as slow as 2Mbps

Is this normal?

Are you using both the b and g client together?

802.11g networks slow down because they are designed to automatically go
into "protected mode" in the presence of a B client.
