Well here goes,
I am sure these are dumb questions to ask, but I am new to networking. Have
a couple of questions.
I have a Linksys BEFSX41 Firewall 4 port router. On this router, I have
three computers and a printer. I now need to have two more ports.
Can I connect a 5 port switch to this router to add other computers etc? And
if I can, what Ethernet cable do I take out of my 4 port router to connect
to the switch?
Or is it better to connect another router to my already existent router?
Respectfully,
R.P.

Yes.

You can remove any of the currently connected cables and plug it into the
new switch location 1 thru 4.

Now plug a cable into the open port on the router and connect it to the
switch UpLink port.

Port 5 and the UpLink port are wired together so you can use either but not
both.

Effectively you will have use of 4 ports in a 5 port switch, 7 ports in a 8
port, etc.

Generally you need not reboot. You should now have access to anything on
your network.

You might want to consider an 8 port switch. A few more dollars but more
expandability.

Yes, a Switch must (usually) be configured (to some degree) during setup.

While these preceding suggestions are right 'on the money', you folks have
been describing a Hub. For this application a Hub will work great as the
additional features of a Managed Switch are really not needed.

Sorry to butt in.

befsx41 and befsr41 are routers with built-in switches.

You can only use one router per DSL/Cable connection.

I have several switches (NOT routers) one is LinkSys EZXS88W. This is a
switch only.
It needs no configuration and it is used as I described earlier. Very
simple to use.

right you are, i still use the second router as a switch ONLY. The
advantage is you can set up 2 sub-nets where one can or cannot access the
other...depending on your needs.
