i have serached over the web for a precise definition of a domain, but still
none has been satisfactory. Can anyone kindly put me through?

Depends on the context.

In the context of the Internet it is a name space that includes all Host
associated with it. (like *.google.com).
It has nothing to do with Windows.

In the context of the Windows Server OSs it is an administrative boundary
and an administrative structure. It has nothing to do with the Internet and
it is not a "network".
