Hi netguru's

I have a cable-modem MOTOROLA SURFBoard 4200 conected by USB.
Another possibility to connect my cable-modem to the PC is using a Ethernet
card.

My question is the next,

my connection will be faster using a Ethernet card ?

my theory is that yes, because by Ethernet card linux will can use DMA

Thanks.

No. Your machine<->interface speed is already much faster than your
internet feed speed. You MIGHT see a minor difference on your local
network, but that's not too likely either.

is maybe, more stable using Ethernet card ?

more compatible.

The USB you are referring to is in fact an embedded USB NIC (Network
Interface). So when you utilise the USB and load the driver, in theory you
are connecting to the cable-modem via ethernet (using a USB-connected
Ethernet NIC, which is not really there.)

The problem here is that you need this correct driver for the USB NIC
portion of the modem.

Going direct to Ethernet, there are thousands of compatible and very cheap
Fast Ethernet cards that will work happily with Linux. The outcome will be
the same. The only place for problems would be the USB drivers mentioned
above if you used USB.

If you have other devices with USB... they might get slower if you
connect the modem. Of course, does that depend on your USB speed.

ALWAYS GET ETHERNET NETWORK CARD INSTEAD OF USB.
It's almost always the smartest thing to do.
