Hi there. I have ordered the Pipex solo package, and now need a router
and ethernet card for one of the PCs. I have decided on the D Link DSL
504 to network three PCs together with, but am really confused at to a
cheap network card to get. I had a look on dabs, and was about to buy the
cheapest PCI one they have for a fiver, but the customer reviews give
conflicting advice, saying it will, and will not work with broadband.
Please help me out guys!!

Works fine on XP. Easy installation and setup.

Any NIC (ethernet card) that works at all will work with a broadband router.

This needs to be qualified to "can be made to work with Broadband". I put a
Belkin 100 mbps card in a friend's PC to be used with an SAR110 router. It
worked when the PC was powered up first but not if the router was powered up
first.

We had to force the XP Ethernet configuration to 100 Mbps/Full duplex rather
than auto. I understand there is a firmware update that claims to fix the
SAR 110 autonegotiation but I have not had the opportunity to try this yet.
The firmware installed in the router as delivered does not allow the
Ethernet configuration to be set in the router.

I was always under the impression you should match your NICs and your hub.
This is especially important if you get a switch. Full duplexing can be a
minefield with parts from different manufacturers.

In the case I referred to there is no hub (yet). I had a PC connected
directly to the SAR110 router. Eventually we will be installing a wireless
network to other PCs and the Ethernet connection will change.

I just intended to raise a warning that there might be some (usually easily
resolvable) configuration problems to watch out for. Default setting don't
always work.

That seems more like a problem with the router than the network card. It should
be able to recognise a network connection without having to be rebooted.

rod.

Yes I agree the later firmware does claim to be able to both, autonegotiate
properly ,and at the same time allow the Ethernet parameters to be set. the
workaround was to fix the XP to stop autonegotiation and it has been working
for months now. One of these days I will try the firmware upgrade but the
router is 25 miles away! I am not at all sure I want to try an upgrade over
the internet!

I don't see why!. Ethernet is an open standard, if manufactures choose to
ignore what 99% of the networking world is doing, then they wont stay in
business very long. Thats why we have standards, so different products
will work together.
