Ether net card problems

hi all

This is my first posting to this group.Hope u guys will help.
Well i have two PC1 and PC2
CONFIGURATION

PC1 : Fairly New
P4(1.7 GHz)+128 RAM+WINXP+40GB HDD

PC2: Quite Old
p2(825 MHz)+128RAM + WINXP + 40GB HDD

NIC=Network Interface Card or ethernet card

Now when my pc1 is on and i remove or add NIC then it does not hang
(while the pc is on)but in pc2 it jus hangs when i try to remove or add
a NIC why that so .ALSO i have two nics one is working and another is
damaged but in PC-1 when i boot with the damaged one attached it does
not have a problem booting up but in pc2 whe
