VPN is a very generic term -- which protocol do you have to speak?
Does that Gnome thing just call it "VPN"?
Some googling suggests it may be PPTP:
pptp-linux
Client for the proprietary Microsoft Point-to-Point Tunneling
Protocol, PPTP. Allows connection to a PPTP based VPN as used by
employers and some cable and ADSL service providers.
How you use it also depends on what Linux distribution you're using.
E.g. on Debian you want it to be available for starting/stopping via
interfaces(5).
If you google on e.g. Debian PPTP you get tons of seemingly useful
hits.
