Hello everyone
At work we have a Windows Server 2003, and the Computer Browser service
doesn't start.
All dependancies have started, and are apparently working fine. All
required files are present.
A error message 1060 is shown (The specified service does not exist as
an installed service.) I don't know what service it is referring to.
A Event ID of 1072 gets logged and it says Computer Browser couldn't be
started.
Also, I tried starting it through the command line.
net start browser
Sometimes it gives the 1060 error message, and some times it starts.
After it starts, I run net start to find out what are the services that
are currently running, and Computer Browser doesn't show up (I am
assuming it started and stopped immediately.)
I have file sharing enabled, as in the File Sharing Protocol is present
in the NIC's properties, and the Firewall properties.
Also, I don't know whether this could be related or not related. In
spite of the share being present and set and all that, I am not able to
access the machine from another machine on the same network using
\\machine-name\\share-name.(The error being log-on not permitted for
this type ..)
Are the two problems related? How do I solve either one please?
Thanks !
PS: I have also done complete virus scans and all other possible scans,
and the machine is clean (or atleast, looks so !). If you think this is
not a configuration problem, rather a malicious program, could you
guide me on removing it? I really need the contents of this machine
shared, and I wanted the Computer Browser to be started to, since it is
started on the other machines in the network too.
(I think I have given pretty much every information I could gather,
such as error numbers, event IDs etc.. if there are some details that
might be missing, please do ask. Thanks for your patience !)
