error in <unknown>

I repeatedly get the following error message:

"Explorer has caused an error in <unknown>. Explorer will
now close."

When I close the window, the same error message appears
seconds later. Furthermore, when I open most other
applications, I get the same error message with different
application names: e.g. when I try to connect to the
Internet with IE, I get "Iexplore has caused an error in
<unknown>...."

Here's the history: I am in the process of setting up a
home network using Linksys Wireless-G products. The
router is installed and four computers are succssfully
connected: one Win XP desktop, two Win XP laptops, and
one Win 98 desktop.

This error message appeared after installing a Linksys
WMP54G card and the accompanying software. Once the
error message appeared, I began troubleshooting. Here
are the steps I've taken, in order:

--ran Norton Utilities
--uninstalled unnecessary applications (McAfee Security
Center, Palm software, Kazaa, among others)
--tried System Restore twice (both times, was informed
that the system could not be resotred to the requested
restore points, with no further explanation)
--re-installed Windows ME from the original CD
--uninstalled the Linksys driver and software
--physically removed the Linksys card
--re-installed Windows ME a second time

I called Linksys and spent over an hour on the phone
troubleshooting, but now that the Linksys software and
hardware is removed it appears that it must be a problem
with the operating system.

If anybody has any suggestions as to how I might resolve
this, or at least narrow down the troubleshooting--for
instance, how I can find out what <unknown> is that keeps
getting the errors, so that I might try to fix or remove
it--that would be very helpful. Thank you in advance....

Such errors are often caused by spyware - download AdAware from
www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.
