error when renewing ip address

I am a tech support agent for SBC internet services. I am helping customers,
who arent recieving an IP from our modem. I instruct them to do a ipconfig /
release renew, but when doing the renew. I get the error of unable to contact
rpc server. I have no idea what the fix for this issue is. It only occurs in
windows XP.

Ipconfig /release renew will only work on the computer getting its address
from the router connected to your cable modem. In the admin tool for their
router they can release/renew the IP address of the WAN, your IP address.
