Error message trying to copy file over network

On a simple 100 Mbps wired LAN with a switch:

From Win 98SE on PC #1, I am trying to copy my c:\windows\desktop
folder (~ 140 MB) to a shared and mapped (to drive X) folder (named
"Backup") on the second partition (D of a 40 GB HDD on PC #2
running Win XP SP1a.

I keep a lot of stuff on my desktop, so the folder has a fairly complex
structure with a lot of sub-directories. I am copying it in the left
pane of Windows Explorer by dragging the "Desktop" folder to the
"Backup" folder in Network Neighborhood, right clicking, and
selecting "Copy Here".

Every time I try this, about 90% of the file is copied until it gets to a
particular gif file that is in a "_files" folder associated with a saved
HTML document. I then get an error message that says something
like "Cannot find file blahblah.gif" and the file copy ends, leaving
the remaining ~10% of "Desktop" uncopied.

However, if I go directly to blahblah.gif and click on it, it opens right
up. If I try to copy just blahblah.gif to the mapped "Backup" folder,
it copies just fine. But if I try to copy it to the copy of "blah_files"
folder (where it belongs) that has already been copied to "Backup",
I get the same error message. Another thing that I noticed is that the
file that is copied just prior to the file that generates the error
message is copied with a shortened DOS file name (with a ~ in it),
but all the already-copied files seem to have retained their long,
windows file names. I can't remember the file names (I am on a
different PC) but they don't have any spaces in them or any illegal
characters. (They do contain "_" characters.)

BTW, the D: partition on PC #2 has gigs of unused space, so that
is not the problem. I would like do be able to just copy the whole
desktop every day as an extra backup of my recent work without
a lot of fiddling around.

Anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this problem?

Thanks,

Chris

It has been a while since you posted this and you probably already figured
out a solution, but just in case you didn't, try renaming the file(s) in
question, first to it's already given name(retype the name and ext), and if
necessary to an 8-character short name. If it works after the first one
could say that there was an "illegal" character which displayed
correctly;Win98 does not handle long file names nor special characters that
well over networks.

You can also share your Desktop folder and perform the same operation from
PC2, where XP would be hadling the filename issues.
