Computer: Compaq Presario 1235/Notebook
Processor: AuthenticAMD
AMD-K6tm w/multimedia extensions
RAM: 32.0 MB
O/S: Windows 98 - 4.10.1998

Quest: Trying to install a wireless adapter to
access wireless internet.

Problem: After installing wireless cards (I've
tried 3 different cards) I get an error in the Device
Manager with a yellow "!". The error reads "The NDIS.VXD,
NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load
the device driver. (Code 2). To fix this, click Update
Driver to update the device driver." This has happened on
all the cards I have tried. That leads me to belive it is
a problem with the O/S or the computer.

Notes: I am sending this information to Microsoft
and to Compaq. I have completed a fresh restore on the
computer using the Compaq issued CD. A regular Windows 98
CD (which I now own) does not get the job done. I tried
to install the cards before and after the "Restore" and I
recieve the same error message. I have tried to use
the "Start-Run-c:\windows\system\sfc.exe" to re-install
the two VXD files. Still does not work. The card I am
using now is a LinkSys WPC11, Ver 4. I have downloaded
the latest drivers and installed them. No help. I have
removed and re-installed the cards a number of times.
Still nothing. I am hoping the Tech Support between the
two companies can come up with an answer to this. From
what I have read on the Web, I am not the only person that
has had this problem but I can not seem to find the right
fix. HELP!! Thanks in advance for your time on this
problem.

The problem isn't that NDIS.VXD and NTKERN.VXD aren't found. The
problem is that the drivers for your network card won't load.

Try installing the wireless cards in a different slot. See if this

Went to the article you suggested. The lines mentioned in
the article are not in my autoexec.bat file. Could this
be because I am running Win 98 and not 98SE? If so, is
there any way you know of to put a Win 98 system on the
net, via wireless connection, using a cardbus type card?
All the info I have read always mention Win 98SE. Thanks!

Check with the card manufacturer and ensure it is compatible with
Win98 first edition. Most of the wireless cards have drivers written
for Win98SE alone.

Just a thought...

Good point, Crewser.

I installed Windows 98 first edition on a laptop yesterday and found
that two of my wireless cards work fine with it:

Netgear MA401
Microsoft MN-520

My Netgear MA521 installs but won't work.

Here's something that will get any computer -- including original
Windows 98 and even Windows 95 -- on a wireless network: a Wireless
Ethernet bridge. It connects to a wired Ethernet adapter and doesn't
require a driver program. Examples:
