I am experiencing a problem with permissions on a network share subfolder. I
have a network share which all users had full control of. I attempted to
modify the security settings on a subfolder of this share so that only
certain users could modify the subfolder’s contents. Upon doing so everyone
(even domain administrators) lost access to the subfolder. Upon losing
access I was unable to open the contents of the subfolder and unable to apply
further security settings to that subfolder. After the problem occurred I
reset all permissions so that the original (everyone – full control) to see
if that would solve the problem. However, Upon attempting to reset the
permissions I received the error message “Error applying security settings.
Access is denied.

Could anyone please help me understand how to fix this? Thanks.

Make sure you are logged on as an administrator and take ownership of the
folder first. The owner of a folder can always change permissions to it even
if they have no permissions. Open un the folder
properties/security/advanced/owner and change owner to administrators. Also
check the box to replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Then hit OK and
you should be able to change permissions. --- Steve
