Error adding server to WinNT Domain

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I hope someone can
help.

I'm trying to add a Windows Server 2003 to a NT Domain. I've done it
serveral times without a problem.

One server all of a sudden began getting a message like, duplicate computer
name exists on Network. It would stop authenticating to the Network and the
resources on that server became unavailable to domain users.

I am certain that there are no computers with that name anywhere on the
network. So, I changed the name of the server as a quick workaround, but we
would like to rename it back to the original name. However, now when I try
to revert it back to the old name, it won't let me because it says there is
another system with the same name. Is there any way to troubleshoot this
problem? I've cleared the name from WINS, but that doesn't help. When I
try to ping the computer name, it resolves to the IP of the server I'm
trying to rename.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Tim Narikawa

When I ping the hostname, it resolves to the server I'm trying to change.
I renamed the server to CTS-ADDEVELOP. I want to change the server back to
CTS-ADDEV.
The server's ip address is x.x.x.20
When I ping cts-addev it resolves to x.x.x.20.

I would double check the DNS records. Perhaps mshosts.

Also you may check DNS scavenging settings.

Turned out to be a WINS problem (I hate WINS, can't wait to upgrade to AD).
Scavenging and rebooting the WINS server seeemed to have fixed the problem.

Thanks for the help.
