Eqipment on line not suitable for Broadband

A friend of mine has just moved in to a property and asked BT for a
new service (the outgoing person wanted to take their number with
them).

BT provided a new number, but I guess that means that they just
changed the exchange end of the wires to allocate a new number.

My friend also asked an ISP for Broadband service, but BT keep coming
back to the ISP saying there is incompatible equipment on the line.

We've cheked all the sockets dont have anything plugged in except for
my friends BT branded DECT base station (which works).

Can anyone tell me what else we should be looking for?

My only other thought is that, as the property is quite old, the voice
line may be being serviced by a shared pair of wires. Would this cause
the problem? How would we tell?

(As usual, we cant get the two parts of BT to acknowledge that one of
them may be able to solve the other ones problem.)

TIA,

JohnK

One possibility could be TPON. Google is your friend.

I had a shared line and said I wanted to use ADSL. BT come out and were up
the pole in the street for ages. 2 days later my line was working.
It's down to who you speak to and how!
If you speak to BT just ask if you re on shared line. I have forgotten the
technical term, but it's when a number of lines connect to one wire.

its unlikely to be at your end. Will be a line issue en-route or some
service like a payphone or similar hooked up to the line at the
exchange end.

look at what the www.bt.com/broadband number checker says. Be aware
that this may have old information if the number was changed very
recently. The bottom paragraph usually gives clues about problems, if
there is one.

If the number was changed recently and you know the previous number on that
line, you could try checking that.
