Encryption

Is an unsecured network faster than one that has been secured as I have done?
I'm using a cable modem and a wireless B router with a nework printer, a
wireless notebook computer, and one, sometimes two desktop computers.
Also how does heavy downloading on one computer affect the others on the
nework?

Hi Danny,

A secured network is always advised, a secured network is no slower than a
unsecured network.

If you are sharing your cable internet between these computers and
downloading big files on one of them then that will effect the internet speed
on the other networked computers.

As I recall the older b cards tend to slow down when doing
encryption/decryption but b speeds generally tend to be faster than the
general home user can connect to the internet, so the over all effect is
small. Now if you are transferring files between two computers on the same
LAN using encryption it will have a noticeable effect.

Heavy downloading by one computer will slow the entire LAN down. The closer
the Internet connection speed is to the speed of the wireless connection the
more noticeable this effect becomes.

I was going to mention speed loss due to encryption and decryption but I
think the loss is to insignificant to worry about, plus most people are now
on 802.11G now which has improved alot since 802.11B.
