Hi everyone,

I think I know the problem -- I think I need to enable the NetBIOS name on
Server 2008.

Here's the symptom I'm seeing: I have Server 2008 running on VirtualPC. The
name of this server is, "MyTest". It's local IP address is 10.11.20.182. The
server is running IIS 7.

If I try to access the default web page from the virtual machine, I can do
so using the URL: "http://MyTest".

If I try to access the page from my host OS or any other machine, however, I
can only do so using the IP address. In other words, from any machine *other
than* the virtual machine I need to use "http://10.11.20.182". The URL,
"http://MyTest" only works if I am on the server itself.

The error I see is the generic, "Internet Explorer cannot display the
webpage".

I'm guessing (but not 100% sure) that the server is not 'advertising' it's
NetBIOS name on the network for some reason. I know this is a basic newbie
question but if you could offer a little help it would be appreciated.

I want to enable the minimum feature(s) to make the server's NetBIOS name
visible.

Thanks you very much.

The first thing to check is that Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled on the
server. Go to the network properties, then to IPv4 properties and click
Advanced. Select the WINS tab and check that Nrtbios over TCP/IP is enabled.

Well, I think your response was more for Server 2003, not 2008.

At any rate, I was able to enable "Network discovery". I just hope this is
the right way to do it.

Why did you think that the instructions I gave you only applied to Server
2003? Can't you find the network properties in 2008? You get there from the
"Network and Sharing Center".

Network discovery doesn't use Netbios. It is more or less a replacement
for the Netbios naming scheme, since Netbios over TCP/IP is not supported in
IPv6. Netbios over TCP/IP is still supported under IPv4 in Vista/2008.
