Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network

When I bring up the screen which lists the available wireless networks and I
need to enter the network key, there is a tick box with the line beside it
"enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network"

I never tick the box. Can someone tell me what this is about.
