Hi, I am thinking about installing Esmith SME server, i have printed the
75page Admin guide! and downloaded the iso file which is called
smeserver-6.0unsupported. Is this the correct one i need?

Also what exactally does the SME server do? Will it work with Windows XP
Home and Pro and will it work on wireless networks I have a Belkin 54g
Router?

Kind Regards

Carl

Yes

From the website:

In one simple, easy-to-install package, you get:
A high performance email server that handles email to and from your
users.
Enhanced security features that reduce the risk of intrusion.
A central file server enabling seamless information exchange among
Windows, Macintosh and Unix machines.
A web server to host your company web and/or intranet site.
Customized management software that makes it a breeze to add new user
accounts, control remote access, configure network printers, set up
workgroups and connect additional networks.
Special services that speed web and Internet access, improving the
performance of your network.
A shared email address book that is maintained automatically.
i-bays, a unique communications and collaborative facility that makes it
easy for employees to work together on projects.

So it provides firewall/router/email/HTTP server & cache/groupware/file
services, based on RedHat Linux.

Should do - I was going to install it the other day, but the download
was corrupted and I'm not in a hurry to do it again because I'm on
dialup.

Presumably you'll be connecting the server to the router by cable, so it
will make no difference at all.

Hi

I install and support e-smith.
Basicly esmith is either a gateway/firwall router or a stand alone server ,
Both Configs provide shared drives and user accounts and email accounts for
your users(both internal and external via builtin webmail). You mention the
belkin 54g router. I assume this is a combined wireless/router. This will
proberly mean that the e-smith will have to run in stand alone mode as the
wireless ap will fall outside the firewall.
Ascii examples of config

adsl---->router---->eth00(esmith)eth01---->LAN This is gateway server
mode
adsl---->router---->LAN-->PC's this is server mode
\--esmith

If you want more help email me direct or call all contact details are at
www.bathford-broadband.co.uk

Finally you dont need an uptodate PC to run it I have installed it on
everything from a P160 to a compaq proliant with twin processors.

Good luck.

Ian
