Dear All

I know this question has been asked before, about news and email readers
(and yes I have read a lot of he articles in the archives). I have
always used Netscape right from the early days. Now this product is not
longer being developed; I fell it is time to move on. I know there are
new products from Mozilla (thunderbird V0.4 etc) however this product is
not yet even at initial release. I also know that its based on Mozilla
1.5, but the download of that product did not impress me, as it did not
look complete.

I already have pop3 spam email filtering working via another products,
which acts as a proxy between Netscape and the pop server. How ever
there seems to be an ever increasing amount of spam/nuisance posts
appearing on the newsgroups, and I want to be able to filter this out as
well (not just using the senders name) some sort of proxy s/w would be
ideal. Does this s/w exist?

My existing needs are for email both plain text and html. I知 not
particularly interested in newsreader functionality such as binary group
mass down load functions. The primary use for this is general email and
text newsgroups.

What clients do people use, which support both email and news?

How many people still use Netscape?

Is any one using Mozilla, and if s, is the product stable and functional
enough to use?

Many Thanks

Andrew

Works fine for me.
Using it on linux for some time now.
It just basically works, though I admit I haven't been using the news
client much, and only started using the mail recently.
Junk mail filtering is in 1.6 alpha, (unsure about 1.5), and seems to work
quite well once you've trained it a bit.

I use Mozilla Firebird as a browser and Thunderbird for email/news...I
am very happy with both. I also use Pan as a newsreader but I don't see
a lot of difference between that and Thunderbird.

Ditto, they both work just fine. But I also use Opera for browsing.

I'm very happy with Turnpike, note it is only free for Demon-connected
users, GBP15+VAT for use with other ISPs.

Also Agent (www.forteinc.com, IIRC) - excellent for email and usenet.

I personally use:

Mozilla 1.4.1 - web browser
Mutt 1.4i - mail client
slrn 0.9.7.4 - news client

That said, all of the above are running on a Linux machine (although
there are ways to install both Mutt and slrn on a Windows machine,
neither product is initially very user friendly and there is a certain
learning curve which has to be negotiated before one becomes familiar
with their use).

For a Windows user, I would recommend:

Mozilla 1.4.1 - web browser (or IE of course)
Forte Agent 1.9.3 - mail (non-HTML) and news
Pegasus Mail v4.1 - mail (plain text & HTML)

I use Thunderbird all the time, and it's extremly stable for me. I
would give it a go. As for spam filtering, I disable the built in
thunderbird one, and use POPFile instead, as it's much more accurate...
