Reading between the lines, that is what he does say, I think. Someone
6km from a substation will be served by 11,000 kv, with a pole
transformer serving themselves and a few surounding buildings if any.
He says that small 'per building' transformers (which I take to mean
the rural 'on a pole' type) are technically no problem, then says
suitable technology is being developed, (so perhaps, not yet), and
then the serious remark: the cell size needs to cover backhaul costs
etc. But no domestic user is likely to be able to afford those costs,
and there certainly won't be 50 users (which is what he recommends)
served by a transformer on a pole.
So I conclude that SSE, although wanting to serve, and trying very
hard, I think, to get a working system and service off the ground,
(and IMO doing it very well) simply won't be able to serve the rural
areas that use polemounted transformers - and that will include most
users more than 2 or 3 km from a substation, I would have thought.
Might not affect your potential (ha!), but could be a problem in some
rural areas.
