Sorry about your predicament Bob. Yes, your neighbor, the one you see when
doing a site scan, can interfere with your connection causing it to drop. The
same thing is happening in my neighborhood. A neighbor, who it is I don't
know, causes my signal to be dropped whenever he turns on his network. I leave
mine powered on all day with 128 WEP. But he must turn his off during the day.
As soon as he turns it on, I drop my connection. In a few seconds I am
connected and no further problems.
I think the wireless adapter in your PC gets confused when another WLAN signal
is detected. I have tried changing channels, making sure that I don't connect
automatically to non-preferred networks in my Advanced properties of my
Wireless Networks Properties, but this still happens from time to time.
Can he do anything to your network? I suppose if he is a skilled enough hacker
he could break your WEP encryption. WAP encryption is a much stronger way to
go but not a lot of 802.11b wireless hardware offer the WAP standard. I would
suggest making your WEP passphrase a non dictionary word, make it 12 or 15
characters long with numbers and letters. Change the passphrase frequently and
turn on MAC filtering. Chances are you'll be okay.
