Eclipse Internet - Any experiences?

Hi guys,
Am just about fed up with Pipex. Been with them for 2 years now and
have suffered countless mail problems and the worlds most unreliable news
server (have resorted to using CIS.DFN.DE).

Have seen one or two good reports about Eclipse Internet and want to migrate
to them but want to know if anyone here is with them and any pros or cons I
should know about!

Pipex seem to be v.slow with fixing things, but if you miss your payment by
one day and BAM! They think the world has come to an end. Bastards!

All the best,

Simon

Steer clear of Eclipse if you want a decent news feed.

As usenet is not one of my priorities, I signed up with Eclipse in August
having watched comments about lots of ISPs and monthly ranking on
adslguide.org.uk - I've not been disappointed.

I use Eclipse to give me VPN access to my work system, it works reliably and
except for once or twice having to disconnect the modem to reboot it has
given good service. The monthly charges are also attractive!

Eclipse is fast and seems reliable (but I've only had it for a couple of
months). The minor problems I had were dealt with quickly. News is thin.
Price is better than many.

Can anyone tell me if I can use my CIS.DFN.DE account for news like I can
now with Pipex?

It's more the unstable mail servers and sometimes v.slow connection that
pisses me off the most

I'd say go for PlusNet!

I've had ADSL with them for about 18 months, and have seen the service
improve over that time.

Most of the bumps in their service were ironed out months ago, and they are
now on the verge of providing the best Usenet service of any UK ISP,
(nothing to stop you using your CIS.DFN.DE account though if you prefer!).

Their prices are competitive, they are quick to fix things when something
goes wrong, and they are excellent when it comes to listening to and
communicating with their users.

You can take a look at the services available by logging in at the PlusNet
Portal at: http://portal.plus.net/my.html
Log in using 'guest' and 'guest' for username and password.

They also operate a "Referrals scheme" whereby you receive a small discount
for each person who takes up your reccomendation for most of their accounts.
I've taken the liberty of emailing you my Username, which if you decide to
join PlusNet, you might care to enter during the application process :-)

Pasted below is an announcement made by PlusNet on 9th December 2003.
----------------------------------------------------------
We would like to bring you up to date with our current progress and
plans for our Usenet (Newsgroups) service.

We are aware that, over the last few months, the service has
deteriorated somewhat, as has been documented in the service status
section of our portal. We recently took temporary measures to resolve a
problem whereby delays were being experienced when posting new articles.
The original problem was caused by the failure of our primary news
server following a storage upgrade. As a result of the growth in demand
for our Usenet service, primarily from heavy users of the ADSL service,
the secondary server alone could not cope. The solution identified
(involving the use of a proxy server) has resulted in a number of
unforeseen issues, including a latency when viewing articles and
downloading messages. We are now in a position where both Usenet servers
are fully functional and during this week we will be moving back to our
original two server configuration. This should resolve the current
issues with regard to unresponsiveness of the server.

What has now become apparent is that our existing Usenet platform is no
longer capable of supporting the demands placed upon it. This is both as
a result of the significant increase in our Broadband userbase and also
because Usenet itself has continued to grow exponentially. A 'good'
binary newsfeed now requires at least 700GB of new data per day. This
data must be collected and stored by our news platform. The limitations
of our current Usenet platform mean we cannot currently take this amount
of news.

We can now announce that a project is underway to overhaul our current
Usenet platform. This will include the installation of higher
specification equipment and additional servers. We will also be
replacing the current Usenet server software (which we have used,
without change, for some 5 years) with a newer, much more efficient,
software solution. Work has already started on building the new Usenet
platform and the estimated completion date for this is February 2004.
Once the installation is completed, it will take a further month for the
news-servers to collect complete article listings and as such our target
date for launch of the new Usenet platform is March 2004. We believe our
target will be easily achievable and work is already well underway, with
much of the required equipment, ordered specifically for the overhaul,
having been delivered already.

Once the new platform is operational, we expect to offer a vastly
improved Usenet service. While, as we have stated before, we do not aim
to compete with the premium subscription based Usenet providers, we are
confident that following the overhaul we will be able to offer a
newsgroup service which is as good as, if not better than, any other
provided by a UK ISP.

Hmmm.... do Plus Net offer ADSL migration?

They certainly do, they actively support it and are keen to help you through
the process.

They seem to be able to manage even difficult migrations where the
"outgoing" ISP drags their heels (I don't think Pipex are one of these).

Check these example posts from
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist...&Board=plusnet (
www.adslguide.org.uk ), where their support staff actively participate.
The most notable in many peoples opinion is Ian Wild, and if you ask him for
advice, he'll be your one-stop-shop!

PlusNet support staff also actively participate in this newsgroup, as well
as their own internal groups and forums, and do not hide behind some
anonymous telephone switchboard.

PlusNet also offer monthly contract options.

PS

Just noticed this thread which may be more interesting, and bears out the
example set by Ian Wild of PlusNet staff.

Been with Eclipse for a while now with no problems. I use cis.dfn.de for
my news as well. I like the one month contract, so if they do go downhill
it will be easy to move.
Tech support seems to be good, only used it once.
