I need a virtual server and easyspace seems to fulfil the requirements
on paper....

Anyone know of any reason NOT to use em?

Yes, way back when they had old nicnames customers (who now have
probably left) they held a domain of mine in ransom when I wanted to
move it. Cost me money to get my main business email address back ;-(

Hmm. I wont be registering domains with them though..just wanted some
virtual machine to play with..

what others are there that will allow me my 'own' debian virtual machine?

I used to hear good things about Slicehost, before they became part of
Rackspace, one customer uses Rackspace's Cloud hosting (for IIS rather
than Linux) and that's been reliable and helpful ... the only niggle I
remember is that for https they insist on selling you a certificate,
even if you already have one you'd prefer to use (e.g. a wildcard one
used elsewhere).

www.freevirtualservers.com - if you buy a domain name from them you get
free web hosting with 100MB/month bandwidth on a Linux server with PHP,
..htaccess etc, I think it's also free without a domain name purchase as
long as your site has advertising buttons back to their site, otherwise
about £12/year is cheapest.

I find the cpanel a bit weird when it comes to adjusting DNS, I'm not sure
it's been implemented properly, I had to raise a ticket to get some change
to the MX records done and ended up having to switch to their paid-hosting
(£25/yr) before they would deal with it; but as for the hosting itself it's
fine, total unrestricted Apache with all mod cons, tiny bandwidth allowance
of course but you can't get owt for nowt, fine for a text-only site or if
you just want to play around with server-side scripting!

Would I use them again? For a personal site yes, no-one else seems to offer
free fully-fledged hosting with your domain name registration anymore!
For a site where I need to hook up mail records / subdomains to an office
server - I'd be wary, as even now the cpanel doesn't actually show the MX
and DNS records they set up for me so I don't think I could change them
without raising more tickets (although admittedly support was quick during
office hours once I'd upgraded to a paid account, but really I should have
been able to do it myself).

I eventually went with gigatux.

For some reason I couldn't ssh to the actual raw console of the virtual
machine, and the instructions they supplied did not mention that you
needed to actually install a linux distro before you could do that
usefully, but the support was excellent. I had a call to a decent
techie, followed up by several emails that eventually resolved all the
issues.

I don't need domain registration - I had those elsewhere - so the job
was all about porting sites to the new server.

I was slightly amazed to find that I can run ANYTHING I want and there
is zero firewalling..I applied my own with IPtables.

I can even send e-mail direct..when was the last time I set up linux
mail to do THAT.

The only thing I suppose they are supplying beyond bandwidth and a raw
virtual machine is some sort of DHCP to get name servers set up.

I was pleasantly surprised that even with a fair load of web images, and
quite a lot of code and data on, I have only used 1.2GB of disk...and te
site runs well with 384MB RAM. No swapping yet at all.

I picked gigatux because they seemed to have - unlike easyspace - a very
good set of comments about support.

Anyway, if you are interested, the biggest and baddest site to go up
there is Gridwatch. My interpretation of the UK national grid real time
stats.

Still a few buglets in the graphs, but looking reasonably good.

Not always. Coal is restricted to only so many hours a year, so when
they fire the bastards up, they tend to want to make as much as they can
out of it.

in summer, the coal is pretty much off. We have about 22GW of both, and,
currently about 8GW of nuclear.

We need damn near 60GW worst case in winter, which a smattering is
hydro, and there are some real old oil burners held in reserve, some
OGCT stuff and as a last resort, quite a lot of standby diesels in
hospitals and the like which can be fired up in an emergency. Probably
half a gig. . Needless to say as Europe totters towards an unsustainable
renewable policy, things are looking bleak. Today we were maxing out the
cross channel links to help France and Holland supply Europe - which is
essentially becalmed under a massive high. And sod all PV in the winter too.

British coal burners balancing German and Danish windmills haha.

'We are effer so Green, ja?, we have indeed shut down our nuclear power'

Yeah, and our emissions go up, you kraut and Danish Cnuts!
