www.freevirtualservers.com - if you buy a domain name from them you get
free web hosting with 100MB/month bandwidth on a Linux server with PHP,
..htaccess etc, I think it's also free without a domain name purchase as
long as your site has advertising buttons back to their site, otherwise
about £12/year is cheapest.
I find the cpanel a bit weird when it comes to adjusting DNS, I'm not sure
it's been implemented properly, I had to raise a ticket to get some change
to the MX records done and ended up having to switch to their paid-hosting
(£25/yr) before they would deal with it; but as for the hosting itself it's
fine, total unrestricted Apache with all mod cons, tiny bandwidth allowance
of course but you can't get owt for nowt, fine for a text-only site or if
you just want to play around with server-side scripting!
Would I use them again? For a personal site yes, no-one else seems to offer
free fully-fledged hosting with your domain name registration anymore!
For a site where I need to hook up mail records / subdomains to an office
server - I'd be wary, as even now the cpanel doesn't actually show the MX
and DNS records they set up for me so I don't think I could change them
without raising more tickets (although admittedly support was quick during
office hours once I'd upgraded to a paid account, but really I should have
been able to do it myself).
