Hi, I am new to Windows server (basic) 2003 and I am trying to switch my
main server acting as a dns server, pop3 server, smtp server, apache
server....from linux to Win2k3. I have successfully gotten pop3 to work
whereby I can receive e-mail. However, it seems that I cannot send e-mail
using the standard Microsoft SMTP and I immediately get a failure
confimation whenever I try to e-mail someone out of my local domain name
(local e-mails seem to work) telling me that it can't relay for the e-mail
address that I am attempting to send e-mail to. Anyone have any ideas?

By default, SMTP will allow relaying for authenticated users. You would have
to be logged in the domain where the SMTP service exists.

If this doesn;t help, can you elaborate on what client you are using and if
you have "authenticate to the server" set in the SMTP client properties for
this account?

Hello,

Is this the error message you get:

"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by
the server. The rejected e-mail address was '<email account here>'. Subject
'Test', Account: '<account name here>', Server: '<server name here>',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for <email
address here>', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number:
0x800CCC79"

If so, you maybe want to look at the "Configure the SMTP Server" part and
the "Configure the email client" part on this web page:

The e-mail client is Outlook 2002 XP and the error message is:

Your message could not reach some of all of the intended recipients.

Subject: ...

The following repient(s) could not be reached:

bill@sentdomain* on date 12:52 PM

550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for bill@sentdomain

Thanks.

As Kristofer and I mentioned, you'll have to configure the client to
authenticate to the server. If using OEx or Outlook as an Internet Mail
client, properties of account, server tab, very bottom says "My Server
Requires Authentication". Check that box and try it again.
