Dynamic vs. static IP address

Every time I boot my laptop and check the IP address using
http://www.ipaddressworld.com/ I get a different final two numbers.
I assume that means that my ISP (ATT Yahoo DSL) is supplying me
with a dynamic IP address.

I would like to set up a slingbox to stream video from my TiVo for
remote viewing. But I can't figure out how my laptop is going to
find my router when I'm accessing it from out of town, for instance.
Also, I have the feeling that the DSL router (something called
2WIRE) has built in firewall which might interfere with the process.
Nothing is transparent because the wireless router/DSL modem just
worked right out of the box with no setup. I haven't a clue how to
go about changing settings etc.

I guess it boils down to the question can I use a slingbox with my
DSL modem/router with dynamic IP address? I hate to invest the
money on the hardware and then find that I can't make it work.

Hi,

You can link the dynamic address of your router to a domain name and
register it in a DNS server using the DDNS protocol, if your router support
this.

Having done that, you can access your computer from the internet by giving
the domain name and not the ip address. You should also configure your
router to make the video streaming service of your computer visible from the
internet (adapt rule from default fireawll rules).

You should also check if your ISP allows you to let your computer act as
server (video) for internet, may be you will need to upgrade your contract.
