Dynamic DNS servers.

Reading the manual for a Netgear ADSL router I see that a Dynamic DNS server
can be selected.

The router updates the Dynammic DNS server each time that its dynamically
assigned IP address is changes.

Does anyone have any experience of this and can anyone recommend a DNS
server.

Yes.
www.dyndns.org works well with my netgear.
I use it to run email servers, etc.
I have found no need for a static IP yet but I have only been using it for
about three years.

dyndns.org works well for me, just set up a free account and try it.
I always feel it's safer than a static IP, should a hacker take an
intrest in my network.

Thanks for the replies. I was a bit slow to notice that it is actually free!

Suppose I have xyz.org.uk registered at 123-reg and use their email
forwarding for (E-Mail Removed)

Can I then register the name www.xyz.org.uk as a dynamic address at
www.dyndns.org without involving 123-reg?

Not on the free service.
They have a few domain names and you get to choose a hostname on one of
their domain names.
The email address I use (E-Mail Removed) is a dyndns.org name
but I set the IP to localhost so that any spammers will just annoy their isp
as the isp's email server tries to forward it to its self. With a bit of
luck the isp will do something about it and remove the spammer.

Thanks, I think my cheapest option is to use the 123-reg web forwarding
facility to send to a name at dyndns.

zoneedit.com allows you to do free dynamic DNS on a domain you own. You set
the nameservers for your domain to be those at zoneedit and then you can
update your DNS entries with a dynamic DNS client. I've only ever used
software dynDNS clients but I assume it would work with the one in the
Netgear too.
