DWL900AP+ times 2?

Bought one of these and a 520+ PCI card. The 520 is looking more and
more like a mistake. Can't put the client where I want with reliable
networking. Seems I should have bought two of the 900AP+ units and set
one up as a client, since the client computer has a wired network card
already and I believe this way I could leave the client computer in the
desired location, run a few feet of network cable to the 2nd 900AP in
client mode. This unit of course positioned in the most advantageous
reception location. Does this make sense? Anybody tried this?

If the actual position of your client is the issue then perhaps you
might try adjusting the antenna on the 520+ or even using an external
antenna (both units use the came connector/antenna).

I have a 520+ and a 900AP+ as well. When I first got them I was fooling
around attaching to a neighbor's Linksys and had the opportunity to try
the 900AP+ in client mode.

It of course does a site survey (in admin mode) but since it doesn't use
client software like the 520+ you lose the signal strength and quality
indicators.

With the indicators on the 520+ I was able to reposition the antenna for
the very best signal strength from the distant Linksys ... with the
900AP+ it was tough bannanas.

In order to get the "best" signal using the 900AP+ I had to set up large
packet sized pings .. and file transfers and adjust to eliminate packet
loss while this was in progress ... a real pain.

When I finished fooling around and set the 520+ back up as a client to
the 900AP+ it was simple to adjust the antennas on both while watching
the strength meter on the screen of the 520+ client machine.

Yeah, I've been looking for some software to indicate signal strength on
the 900AP. Haven't found any. Moving the antenna didn't help much, which
is why I had to move the whole box.

From what I've read, antenna cable causes so much loss that diminishing
return quickly becomes a problem. The network cable seemed an elegant
solution to that problem, as using the extra 900AP in repeater mode, my
other option, also cuts down file transfer speed.

Can you recommend an antenna/cable combo that has promise and doesn't
cost more than another 900AP?

You might find something useful here ...

http://www.hyperlinktech.com/index.html

I am sure others will post additional sites. DLink even has their own
line of antennas ... several suitable for use on an 900AP+ or 520+ card.

It is not likely that you will find software that provides a signal
strength reading from a 900AP+ in client mode since the host PC is
simply talking to an ethernet port (it doesn't have a clue it is working
wireless).
