OK I'm not even a newbie, I'm a wannabe, trying to get some understanding
together.

In my household there is: one permanently resident desktop with XP Pro, one
laptop with XP home, one intermittently present desktop with Win 98SE, one
iMac with OS9

All these use their own modems to connect to the same ISP.

What I picture is a wireless network sharing a broadband connection.

Is it feasible to setup the network first, and when that is all working, go
broadband?

If so, what do I need to buy for step one?

Or are there any good websites to take people gently by the hand?

I suggest you read up on the background first - try these sites:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/
http://www.homenethelp.com/connection-sharing.asp
http://www.netgear.com/docs/refdocs/...lessBasics.htm

If you're not on somebody's shit list, you're not doing anything
worthwhile.
