Duplicate Name exists on the network

I am having a possible WINS problem. Every morning when the office boots up
their computers we get "A duplicate name exists on the network". I know that
there are not any duplicate names because I can get rid of the error by
simply deleting the workgroup registration of mydomain in the WINS active
registrations. When I reboot my computer the error message is gone my PC's
IP address becomes the workgroup registration in WINS with the WINS server is
the owner. It appears that the next PC that gets booted up becomes the
workgroup registation and this continues on working OK throughout the day.
By the next morning there is a static entry for the workgroup type with the
WINS server as the IP address and a server in another domain as the owner and
then the message is back.

What should be the default or best practices enty's for a domain? I have
Workgroup, Domain Master Browser, Domain Controller and Normal Group Name.
Only Domain Controller is static. When I compare to other domains in WINS
they have the same entry's, but Domain Controller and Domain Master Browser
are static. How do these entry's become static? How can I trouble shoot or
fix my Workgroup problem

Thank you

If you have a workgroup with the same name as your domain
then you do have duplicate names.

Thanks for the reply

I paid more attention this morning and found out that the static entry that
takes place overnight is a workstation entry and when I delete it, it becomes
a workgroup entry.

Any ideas?

Not without more details. Event Id as well as the description.
Do you have a domain model? If so do you have standalone
machines that are not domain members? If yes, do you have
their workgroup names the same as the domain name? How
about the computer name? Do you have usernames that match
the computer name? The are lots of reasons for your error and
it can be difficult to diagnose.

There should not be any machines with a workgroup name the same as the
domain name. Some machines are in another domain.

I'll assume you've seen the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822659/en-us

If yes and you've confirmed there are no duplicate
names I would reset the stack on the problem XP
machine:

I was able to resolve this issue by tombstoning the static entry that was on
a replication partner. Then I deleted each entry on every replication
partner.

Thanks for the reply's.

Glad to hear. I failed to mention static entries in WINS are not
recommended. The whole point of WINS is dynamic NetBIOS
name resolution.
