Duplex problems with NFS mounts

I am running Suse 9.0 with Kernel 2.4.24, whith a IBM Opteron Box, internal
10 / 100 / 1000 Meg Broadcom ethernet. Whenever I enable full duplex at 100
Meg I take HUGE errors while connected to a Cisco 6505 Switch. If I set up
for auto auto, it negotiates to 100 Half Duplex and seems to be stable. Anyone
run into any similar problems ?

Sounds like the switch is forced to 100 half, so when you force your end to
full duplex, you pretty much break networking. Read

Thanks Frank,
I have read that article quite a while ago. Its not as easy as that, I now
have control over the switch to confirm its configuration and Full Duplex
breaks performance by a 4 order of magnatude.

Okay, troubleshooting time then.

- are both ends configured for autonegotiation?

- you said you verified that the host autonegotiates to 100 half. what
does the switch side negotiate to?

- when full duplex, does either end start racking up lots of collisions or
errors?

- does the switch even support full duplex?

mii-tool and ethertool both report proper 100 Full

Yes they are, I have tried both, Switch auto and Linux hard, Switch hard
and Linux auto

Well, then there you go. Whichever end is getting collisions is *not* at
full duplex. Half duplex at one end and full duplex at the other produces
exactly those kinds of results.

linux auto" or Switch hard and Linux hard"? 'Cos that's the only way its

Auto-negotiation is somewhat problematic. Sounds like the switch port is
set to auto-negotiate but isn't able to do so and 100-half is the happy
medium.

You'll need to force matching duplex and speed on both sides (PC and
switch) and then monitor for errors.
