Dunno what I'm doing!(Goes on a bit!)

Hi

I'm a total newbie and need some advice for getting onto ADSL. I'm currently
on Freeserve dial up (assuming that's relevant). I want a package that
doesn't cost me much over £20 a month, is equally good for newsgroups
(through OE), large file uploads/downloads and also for gaming but I want to
be as versatile as possible for everything else the internet offers. I
intend to use this both for recreation and business, which in my case is
publishing and often involves handling large image files. I don't intend to
be online permanently, only when I'm actually using it (though I do have a
Firewall and whatnot).

I know some packages come with a USB modem and I'm as happy to source my
own. Some opinions on what the better modems are for £40-£70 would be
appreciated. If people are happy with the one they got from their ISP I'd
like to hear about that too.

Some packages have a free install which suits my meagre budget. Plusnet,
Freedom 2 Surf, Virgin, Pipex, Demon, Inweb & breathe to be exact (I have
done a bit of research!) but is that actually a good thing and do I end up
paying more in some other way? There's this £50 set up cost from BT for
example that I can't figure out if the ISPs incorporate that into their
costs or not.

As far as the sweeteners go I have webspace and it's a .me.uk domain which
is better than the free web space that comes with some of these packages
isn't it? Considering the free domain names will have to include the ISP
name in them I expect. I'm ok for email addresses too. I expect contactable
tech support, spam and virus filtering and back up dial in any package I go
for too, not as an extra for a fee.

Freedom 2 surf offer CGI, SSI, POP3 & IMAP, PHP, MySQL, Postgres, Frontpage
Extensions but I have no idea what any of those are or whether they'd be any
good to me. Regardless of that they seem to offer a pretty good package from
what I understand. Sadly that isn't much!

Also not sure whether static or dynamic is better for me, static was
recommended by a guy I know who works for Demon but I'm not sure if it's
right for how I intend to use the net.

Sorry to go on, a lot of things to get my head round.

Cheers
Jay

You dont want much for £20 then

To be honest I'll think you'll struggle to find what you're looking
for within your budget.

I use Pipex and fin them ok. They charge £23.44 a month inc vat and
offer 50MB webspace included. Who is your web address registered to -
it may be that you can have it forward people on to your Pipex
webspace.

CGI and SSI are components used within webpages and Pipex only allows
use of ones provided by them (they have a free collection). CGI's
include items such as guestbooks, stat counters, forms etc.

Their e-mail tech support can be a bit slow too - they take generally
about 2 days to reply.

Hope this helps,

Calum.

Really? I didn't think I was actually asking for much (it just looked like I
did). Plusnet, Pipex and Freedom 2 Surf's cheap packages seemed to be
offering pretty much what I'm asking for. What people don't seem to realise
is I'm looking at this from the perspective of someone who's been used to
56k dial up. As long as I can game without lag, have a good source of usenet
groups and can download, say, 50mb in considerably less than 1-2 hours then
I'd be pretty happy.

I'm registered with 123.reg and hosted by a fairly obscure ISP called
UKGamers. I have a bit of a deal with them as one of the companies I work
for does them a few favours. Pipex was on the shortlist, but if I can get
the same with Plusnet or Freedom 2 Surf and save a few quid I'd rather go
with them.

CGI's could be handy, but as freebies go nothing to get excited about as I
would think I could source these myself elsewhere.

I wanna be able to pick up the phone, so if email is the only option with
Pipex then I'll be going elsewhere.

Not that it's broad?!
I want it for the bandwidth, not to be a potential hackers plaything 24/7.
Even with an active firewall I don't feel entirely safe, these people always
find new ways of screwing you over.
