Dummies' questions

1. Is this NG appropriate for really simple
questions from new users? (Perhaps a WinXP
networking group might get more traffic.)

2. Task #1 is done OK, connecting the new
WinXP via wireless to the old Win98 and thus
to the Internet (via wireless modem). I added
a Belkin wireless card to the XP and used Belkin
(non-automatic) software to configure it (since
the WinXP Ethernet drivers had somehow been
munged so its nifty automatic network would not
run) and then entered Belkin settings (e.g. WAP
encipherment key) to software for the wireless
router on the Win98 PC. The ISP's fully automatic
wireless modem worked OK as before, i.e. both
PCs now are connected via wireless to the Internet.

3. Task #3 is File Sharing and incomplete. On
both PCs, / Control / Networks / File Sharing has
been activated: but I cannot actually see either
PC from the other's console. In fact I am not sure
what software I should use for this purpose.
Should the WinXP PC's drives appear in the Win98's
EXPLORER and vice versa? Their wireless cards
are quite different, e.g. Win98 allows me to set
the wireless channel (default = 6 but chan. 11 is
supposed to be better quality) but no WinXP menu
appears to display channel.

Hence Q.1 -- what is the best NG for newbie
questions like this?

Not sure if this was answered,,, saw 19 supposed messages, but only one
actually ended up here upon download. [same over on 98_gen, several messages
disappeared]..


Uhm, did you share anything yet??? Both must have something shared or its at
best a *one way street*.

Did you use simple sharing on the XP box?

Is Guest activated, and *everyone* or specific * users * being used on the
XP?

Once you get the sharing out of the way,, then if you want, map the folders
and/or files that you have shared. Explorer should show those folders.

Since XP is involved, a WinXP networking group would be better. A lot
more people read that group than this one.

1. On XP, run the Network Setup Wizard (in Start > All Programs >
Accessories > Communications).

2. If the Wizard detects the Belkin router's shared Internet
connection, tell it to use the existing shared connection.

3. If the Wizard doesn't detect the router's shared Internet
connection, select the connection method "This computer connects to
the Internet through a residential gateway or through another computer
on my network."

4. Tell the Wizard to turn on file and printer sharing.

5. If both computers have floppy disk drives, create a Network Setup
Disk when prompted, then insert the disk in the Windows 98 computer
and run it.

6. If both computers don't have floppy disks, configure the Windows 98
network settings manually in Control Panel > Network. Make sure that
"File and Printer Sharing" and "Client for Microsoft Networks" are
installed. It isn't strictly necessary, but networking will be a
little easier if you go to the Identification tab and specify the same
workgroup name that Windows XP uses.

7. Configure any firewall programs to allow access by other computers
on the LAN.

8. On each computer, right-click and share any desired folders.

9. You can try accessing the other computer through Network
Neighborhood (98) or My Network Places (XP). However, those are often
unreliable. If they don't work, access the other computer directly by
typing the other computer's name in the Start > Run box in this
format:

\\computer
