Dumb wireless router question - perhaps...

Some wireless routers specifically say they can handle up to 255
devices, but many make no mention of being able to cope with more
than 1 (some describe themselves as 4 port wireless routers)

Are they all capable of handling more than one PC on the LAN side ?

(a colleague is looking for a cheap one)

Cheers

4 port wireless generally means that it has 4 seperate lan sockets.
These will usually be connected to an internal switch, to route packets
between them, and the wireless side.
They are all capable of handling more than several PCs.

The ports are in addition to the wireless service - my BT Voyager 2100
has 4 wired ports and as many wireless devices as you care to connect

You wil generally only be able to connect up to the maximum of a
single subnet (approx 250 devices) - this includes wired and wireless
devices. Obviously if you buy a second router you will be able to
connect more.

Remember that you probably don't want to connect more than a handful
of wireless devices since the bandwidth is shared and performance will
drop off *very* quickly.

It depends - both my routers are quite happy operating on 10.0.0.0, with
a potential 16 million (minus a few) potential devices.
Not that I'd expect their routing tables to be able to cope with this
of course.

Fair enough. It depends on the subnet mask as well, so you could get a
single Class A subnet - not very efficient!
