Dual WAN router with ADSL modem/router?

I've bought an Edimax BR-6524K dual-WAN router, and was wondering if
anyone could advise me on how to set it up with my ADSL modem router
(I aim to use it in conjunction with 2 ADSL connections - the 2nd is
being installed in the next few weeks).

I currently have an account with Zen Internet - wth a static IP
address - and use an Origo modem router. The Edimax router seems to be
geared towards non-UK markets, and does not have an option for PPoA
connections, so I was wondering how I should configure the WAN port on
the Edimax to work with the Origo modem router?

The available "broadband types" for the WAN ports on the Edimax are:
- Cable modem - your ISP will automatically give you an IP address
- Fixed IP xDSL - your ISP has given you an IP address already
- PPPoE - your ISP requires you to use a point-to-point protocol over
ethernet connection
- PPTP - your ISP requires you to use a point-to-point tunnelling
protocol connection
- L2TP - your ISP requires you to use a layer 2 tunnelling protocol
connection
- Telstra Big Pond - for Australia

Presumably I can't use the Edimax to initiate the connection to Zen
ADSL, so I'll need to continue to use the Origo to do this, but when I
plug the Origo into the WAN port of the Edimax which of the above
broadband types should I select?

TIA
Ian

You want cable modem for both - get an IP address from each primary routers
DHCP server. Set the DHCP timeout to the highest value (like forever).
The two primary routers for each ADSL perform their normal connection.
You just take an RJ45 cable from each primary router into the WAN side
of the Dual WAN router.
Just use the Cable modem setting - an IP address will be acquired from
each primary router.
The tricky bit is to make sure all three routers are on different IP
address ranges, for example set the routers gateway address to:
Primary router 1 to 192.168.0.1
Primary router 2 to 192.168.1.1
Dual WAN router to 192.168.2.1
I haven't heard of or seen an Edimax. I use a Hawking H2W54G dual WAN
router at work - it's a bit of a pain to configure as you have to
reboot the router every time a port forwarding change is made. That's
a problem if half a dozen people are connected and you have to explain
to them each time the internet is about to go down.
Also the load balancing causes connection timeout when trying to port
forward from both DSL connections to a server connected to the
dual WAN router.

Had seen this one mentioned before. Could you let us in on where you
found it, and how much it cost, please?

Indeed, as you don't have a suitable modem within the Edimax and
it therefore depends on the Origo to do the ATM link to exchange,
and the PPP login to your ISP. Just a couple of patch leads and
using the cable modem settings should do you. Will be interested
to know how well it works when 2 connections are available and
how you plan to use the unit (to load share, or can one connection
be a backup) ?

Thanks for the replies - finally got cable modem to work, after
upgrading the firmware and doing a hard reset. The Edimax is really
slow to respond to commands (20+ seconds). Is this typical of this
sort of router?

I heard that the Hawking was a little buggy (dropped connections), so
found the Edimax on eBay for £50 (used). I think the newer version
(6624) retails for around £120.

The primary reason for investing in dual wan is the imminent arrival
of free Sky broadband. I want to use the Sky connection for HTTP
traffic and Zen for newsgroups, P2P etc. (web browing takes a real
nosedive when there are P2P uploads in progress). Failover would also
be useful of course.

I now have a little problem with the Edimax router - when I try to use
the "Quick Setup" wizard it hangs at the first stage (Time Zone -
server setting). I select a time zone, click "Next" and the page just
sits there.

I've tried soft/hard reset, powering on/off, but can't get past the
first page.

Has anyone else encountered this sort of problem with an Edimax router
(or similar)?

I've decided to upgrade to the new Edimax, which is more of a load
balancer, so let me know if you'd be interested in the BR-6524.
