Dual Nics in Different Subnets on Server 2008

I want to set up dual NICs on two 2008 Servers

Eth0 will be in 10.210.36.0/16 with default gateway of layer 3 switch
Eth1 will be in 10.210.36.112/16 with no default gateway

I do this because Eth0 is in different switch altogether than Eth1. So if I
lose the switch, I should fail over to Eth1 network.

I get an error message that says that having the NICs with different default
gateways will cause serious problems.

I set up Eth0 with IP and give a default gateway of layer 3 switch. Ping
from all other subnets works great. Ping to Eth1 does not work at all. Do I
need a DG on Eth1?

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

James

I would disable the second NIC and only enable it if required.

Hello JamesF,

A DG is needed if you have to leave the subnet, networking in that subnet
will work. But multihoming machines especially if they are domain controllers
results in many problems.

If you need a failover mechanism check out if you are able to use teaming,
HP and Broadcom provide some software for it. We use it that way that the
teamed NICs are connectec to different switches and the team is configured
for failover or loadbalancing.

See this article about:
