hello all,
i have the following problem;
i have a fedora redhat 3 server with dual onboard nic. eth0 and eth1.
eth0 is the default and i can not figure out a way to get the kernel to
recognize eth1 as a hot spare should eth0 fail.
is there someone who can give me some hints on linux ip binding, load
balancing, or whatever other method that can be employed to solve this
problem.
thanks,
ervin.

If the Ethernets connect to a switch that understands
the STP (Spanning Tree Protocol), the way to go is to bridge
the interfaces together and let the switch and bridge
negotiate the path to be used.

For details, Google for Linux bridging.

unfortunately the switch does not understand STP. so i am left
scratching my head for another solution based of a server side
configuration.

In your /usr/source directory search for - bond* - (no hyphens please)
as well as look here:

http://linux-ip.net/html/ether-bonding.html
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/5524
http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+fc3+bonding+driver
http://linux-ha.org/

It is not clear from your OP what you're after. Are you just needing
some ponters on how to get the bonding driver working? Are you wanting
to provide a "real" failover/HA solution? In the latter case, there
are several (somewhat) pre-canned soluitons available depending on your
distro. With RHEL (eg. Centos) you might want to look here:

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/csgfs/
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/e...r-piranha.html

Sorry, it's been some time since I've installed the bonding driver
(certainly not with any FC) so these are the best I have to offer.

good luck,
prg
