dual domains possible?

two computers on my desk, sharing keyboard, mouse and monitor. One is
Server for local domain, (2000 Server) Second is client on that
domain, and shares printer with four other computers which are not
clients - all five are XP pro. Any reason why I can't set up the
client on my desk as the server (XP Pro) for a local domain in the
room, saving me tons of time and problems?

Thanks
Ray

Ray:

If I understand you correctly, you want to be able to use the XP domain
client as a server for the 4 XP non-domain clients, right? If that's the
case then no, XP Pro cannot be a Domain Controller - only Windows Server
products can be made DCs.

But if all you want to be able to do is use the XP domain client as a file
server for the other clients, then just make sure that all local accounts on
each XP computer have the same username and password. For example, you have
2 users in your office, Paul and Mary. On each XP computer, create a LOCAL
(for the non-domain computers all accounts are considered local) user
account each for Paul and Mary and make sure the passwords are exactly the
same on each. After setting up the appropriate share and folder permissions,
they should be able to access shares or printers on any of the 5 XP
computers.

NOTE: I haven't tried this completely myself, but it should work. If it
doesn't, there might be some issue with Simple File Sharing being enabled or
not enabled.

Martin

That they share the display and input devices is irrelevant
to their networking -- as long as you can operate them.

Pro boxes cannot be domain controllers, only
server (product) can do that.

XP and other NT-class workstations can share drives
and act as servers in other ways but they cannot be
DCs to support a domain.

I don't understand how this would save you any
time much less tons, but if you already have a domain
on the server, you can join the other machines to that.

You keep however placing the word "local" in proximity
to 'domain', so perhaps you don't mean domain but are
instead using Computer (server local) accounts?

Computer based accounts are sometimes referred to as
local, when what you seem to want is a domain to which
all of the machines and the users can belong.

That requires a Domain Controller (DC) which must
run on Win2000/2003 SERVER only.
