Let me apologize for the two arrogant script kiddie wankers who, more than
likely typing one-handed, offered no help and only puerile opinions.
Unlike those ignorant twits I understand how long you've been waiting for
high speed access to be available where you live, and I'll try to make some
suggestions that might help.
I think Verizon's offer of "free" MSN sofware is not much of a gift. If
their browser is any different than IE, and I doubt it, I also doubt it
would be an improvement. If requires higher CPU speed it would seem to me
it's more for visual hula hoops and spy ware than for internet access.
I have Comcast cable, but I sure don't use their cluttered homepage or
their slow and klunky mail interface.
Take a look at some excellent FREE software: Mozilla Thunderbird mail
client and Mozilla Firefox browser. For newsgroup reading, there's another
excellent free program, 40tude Dialog. I can't guarantee they'll run an a
P-II 366, but there's certainly a better chance than that MS bloatware
will. I've got an old P-II 233, that even with Win9SE and only 64MB of
RAM, and running IE, works perfectly quickly at accessing the web. It's
just a backup for my wife to use for eMail when she doesn't have her work
machine at home. If we were serious about using it more often I'd
definitely get more RAM for it - at least 128 but preferably 256, and I'd
think about finding a cheap 5400 rpm drive - it's not worth a 7200 rpm
laptop drive.
So ditch the MSN crap and the MS Internet Explorer for really free stuff
that's been called the best of breed (just Google for Mozilla and for
40tude Dialog); and add a little RAM to the old box (256MB should cost
maybe $40 - try
www.crucial.com) and enjoy your new fast access.
Best wishes,
