DSL Modem/Router hookup

I got a call from a friend who is trying to install a wireless router
between his DSL modem and desktop computer to create a small home
wired/wireless network. The router will be wired directly to his desktop
computer and he hopes to link up two more computers through wireless PC
cards.

He unplugged the modem cable from the Ethernet card in his computer and
plugged that into the router. He then installed a new cable from the router
to the Ethernet card. He says he followed the Netgear instructions that
came with the router. Of course, this didn't work. I suggested he look at
two things: 1) the cat 5 cable might have to be a crossover cable. This
was the case with my own home wireless network connected to Comcast cable.
2) the Ethernet card (which came with the DSL modem) might have to be
reconfigured or replaced.

Any more suggestions?

Has he gone into the router configuration (likely http://192.168.1.1 -
depending on the brand) and properly setup the PPoE settings and the
userid/signon for his ISP

Thanks. I'll ask him.

I hope more posts go to this thread as this is the same scenario I have, but
have had no luck in getting to where I want to get (using linksys befw11s4
router, my main xp puter, one hardwired LAN winME puter, one wireless
laptop). Configuring router at http:\\192.168.1.1 (essentially plugging in
my main puter's ethernet MAC to emulate as one computer) does get me to the
point where I can share DSL with my three computers, but I then lose my LAN
(be sure NAT is enabled too).

Question [I have so many]: I see 'DHCP enabled' in some of my status menus
for say a specific ethernet card [a wireless NIC I've tried on my winME
machine for example]. This means just that it is getting it's IP address
from the server, right? I mean, it's not trying to act as the server is it?
I hear all these terms being thrown around in this NG, but in the software
and 'wizards' I have, it's all pretty basic...even the configure menus of
the routers and modems themselves. In "My" world, none of this works.
