DSL Modem/Router hookup - followup

I asked this question earlier but I have more information now so I'm asking
it again. My friend has a DSL internet connection and wants to share the
connection through two more computers. He bought a Netgear wireless router
and inserted it between his DSL modem and computer using cat 5 cable.

It sounds like he's followed the installation instructions closely. But he
is unable to log into the router through http://192.168.1.1/. Does he
have to configure his Ethernet card that previously connected to the DSL
modem? Does it need an SSID like a wireless PC card would? Other than
that, I sure can't figure out what's wrong.

Thanks in advance.

Connect a computer to the router through a 'real' Ethernet connection.
Configuring through the wireless is a long-shot.

It he's connceting to the router with cable/ethernet, he should be
getting an ip address from the Netgear router. Has he done a
release/renew? Do he get a link light on the router when connected?
This should be easy. Does he know if his nic card is good/working?
Check the link lights, maybe the patch cord is bad...

Sorry to confuse you. He has connected his wireless router to the existing
Ethernet card that previously was connected to the DSL modem using a cat 5
cable. He hasn't tried any wireless connections yet. Does a standard
(non-wireless) Ethernet card need to be configured somehow to connect to the
wireless router through a cat 5 cable?

He says the status lites on the router are working but he is not at all
technically-minded. I haven't asked him about the status light on the nic
card. I assume the nic card is working okay since he is still able to
disconnect the router and got back to his DSL modem-pc connection.

Oops, sorry, didn't read closely enough.

As long as his Pc is setup to obtain an ip Address and the DNS address
automatically, he's all set on the PC. With DSL, most providers require you
to log on with an id/password using PPoE. This is done on the setup page of
the router itself.

Should be in the instructions, but not really intuitively obvious.

Thanks. His PC is set up to obain the IP and DNS address automatically so
that should be okay. The first problem is that he can't set the PPoE
settings until he can log into the router. I'll ask him about the status
lights on the Ethernet card to see if he has any sort of connection with the
router.

Try connecting with IP address 192.168.0.1 not 192.168.1.1. That's the
address my Netgear wireless router MR814v2 uses.

From a "cmd" prompt, enter "ipconfig".
With a typical setup, he will have something like:
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
If the IP address is not 192.something, he has an abnormal setup.
If the address is 169.something, he's looking for a dhcp address and not
getting one issued.
If the address is 192.something, the router should be reachable via http on
the address shown as the Default Gateway, like http://192.168.0.1
(like Carl said ;-)

Another interesting point would be the "PPPoE" login required.
Does his PC currently "log in" to the internet? This is usually through
some software added to his PC. If he does, that login needs to be entered
in the config of the router, and removed from the config of the PC.
If it's trying and failing to login in to PPPoE, that may be preventing him
from connecting to the local router for admin purposes.

Okay, you're friend probably has PPPOE software loaded to allow his direct
connection to the modem. He will have to clean that junk out before he will
have reliable connections again. Have him check for programs like Ether300
or WinPPPoe on his system. These will have to be uninstalled and then he can
reinstall his LAN card. As soon as he connects to the router he will need to
enable the PPPOE Connect to get the DSL internet going again. If he is using
XP he shouldn't have the PPPOE software installed sometimes tech support
rookies will have you do it anyway just to get connected. Of course if he is
connecting PPPOE within XP he just needs to go in and disable it.

Hope that helps.
