The RJ11 socket on the modem plugs in to the phone line, it connects to the
laptop using a USB port. As you said, it's a USB modem.

HP were talking about an ethernet modem or router, which would be connected
to the network socket on the laptop.

Its a USB modem - you connect it to the laptop via the USB port

I have an Alcatel USB Speedtouch dsl modem which I want to use with my HP
Compaq nx9105 laptop. HP tell me that the dsl modem must be connected to
the laptop via the RJ45 Network socket and NOT the RJ11 socket which is for
the in-built V92 modem.

How the hell do I attach a modem which has a RJ11 plug to a network socket
with a RJ45 socket?? Is there an adapter I can buy?

Any help would be appreciated please.
