DSL Connection - Dynamic IP address

Hi!

I have recently subscribed to Tiscali Broadband and received all the
equipment necessary. Tiscali require PPPOA to connect.

When I first got my stuff, I could not configure the modem under Linux
without a lot of help from various websites and drivers; so I used
Windows instead. Apparantly, every time I connected I was given the same
IP address.

Now that I have happily got the connection working with Linux, I have
been able to connect but unfortunately get a different IP address each
time I log in. I was hoping that somebody here may know of a way to
"request" the same IP address used in the last session.

Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve Williams

Hi,
I'm afraid, but there is absolutely no way to do this!
Your ISP has no interest in giving you always the same IP
.....their business model says for sure: Static IP costs more :-(
because otherwise you could host your own server ...
But there is an other "trick". Have a look at
http://www.dyndns.org/ ;-) ... smart guys there!
Cheers,
Monzai

Btw. if you're an admin have a look at http://www.monzai.com/
:-)

I was with Pipex who dont give static IP addresses but in the whole year I
was with them, I had the same IP address always.

There is no way of doing this unless you make some mad script which
reconnects until you get the IP address you hope for!

Monzai offered one solution, also check out www.noip.com

Before you said that, I had started to feel an indecision, aside from the
fact that they dont seem to want to take payment from my CC (probably so
they can send me nasty letters), when I phoned their premium rate support
to get help setting up the modem that /they provided/ they promptly told
me "we dont support linux".

I wish I had continued to use Force9, who would provide twice the speed
at just a tiny bit more cost; although I would have to buy my own modem,
I think a static IP is optionally thrown in along with other great
things, and their support are a lot more responsive too

That's why I didn't see a problem, and chose not to bother with Force9.

Thanks, both of you, for your help; I already have a dyndns account and
will probably switch it to a dynamic ip instead of static ip account; or
just get an F9 account.

There is a program that will track your IP address changes and keep you
informed of your current IP address. I know serveral people who use it to
access their home web server or telnet into their home computer.
It's at http://www.creekstone.net/software/ipadvisor

I got so annoyed with Comcast for changing my IP number that I switched to
ToadNet DSL. I have to pay more for a static IP number, but at least users can
connect to my server. I haven't found any other solution to the problem of IP
number changes. ISP's change it whenever they want, unless they give you a
static IP.

I've been told that http://www.zoneedit.com/ is a good tool for
dynamically changing the IP address of a domain (but I don't know if it
will run under linux)

Do a web search (google) for "free domain names" and
"free dns hosting" to get a free domain name etc and tools to change IP
addresses. This web article is by someone who has already done the
search for you http://www.a2z-free.com/free-domain-names.php

One thing I like about Creekstone IPadvisor is that I dont have to mess with
dynamic DNS accounts, etc. It simply reports the IP address, which is all
most of us really need to acces our home computers. It puts it on a web
page I can access from the office or a client's site. Additionally it sends
an e-mail to my cell phone, and work e-mail address but I don't always have
that handy. Took me about 30 seconds to be installed and running.

It certainly does! I serve my web site off ADSL using zoneedit, 1000 unique
visitors a day and on average only 20 mins of inaccessibility a week due to
changing IP.
