DSClient for Win98 do not work with Win2003 DC

I cannot install the DSClient for Windows 2000 in my Win98 workstations,
using a new Win2003 environment.

If I configure the workstations without the DSClient, and follow the
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308178, I can logon with no problems in the
domain. However, if I install the DSClient, the logon error message
described in http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308178 apper in the screen. To
solve, I need to uninstall the DSClient, uninstall the Client for MS Network
and reinstall this last, overwriting the news libraries of DSClient.

Any one had this problem and solve it?

This is indicated for Win95 Workstations, but in my case, the workstations
are Win98SE. More, I should not disable a directive of security such that,
because in my environment, some clients use VPN connections to our system
support.

We run Win98 and NT4 clients on our 2003 Domain and don't use the DSClient
at all. Everything works fine. In my opinion the DSClient provides very
little benefit and isn't worth the hassel if it is giving you trouble just
trying to install it. If it allowed Group Policy to work then it would be
worth it to me, but it doesn't, so it isn't worth fooling with to me.

Phillip,

In a single domain model the DS client isn't as needed as in a multi site
model.

With the NT4.0 machines in particular they look for the PDC emulator if they
don't have the DS client installed, with the DS client they can use the
closest DC.

Win9x machines are similar in behavior.

We're running 40 sites in an intergrated AD domain, and Win9x and NT4.0
machines without the DS client rarely work without issues, with the client,
they're happy campers.

Just my 2 bytes.

Hi,

As far as I know, the SMB signing issue only affects Windows 95 without
DSClient and NT before SP4. I have never heard of problems with DSClient on
Win98 machines.

You can get by without DSClient in a small network, as long as you realize
you will not have ADSI. Unless you use third party tools, you will not be
able to communicate with Active Directory from a script. For example, you
will not be able to determine group membership.

Can you verify that you only have the problem when the password is expired?
Is the PDC emulator available? Is there a Global Catalog server on site?

Hi,

I also have a network with Windows 2003 Server and some W98 SE box and have
problem when password is expired.
When a user log and his password is expired, a message windows popup to
notice that the user password is expired. After click Ok an change password
windows popup. Now the user can change is password. After click Ok on that
windows a third popup windows appear with message like "Your password has
been change". When the user click this last windows session is ending and
the microsoft logiin windows pop. At that point it is impossible to log on
the machine until it was reboot.

Two notes :
1- After that the user password has been changed for the new one.
2- If we wait 10 to 15 seconds before click Ok on the last Message "your
password has been change" the session is open normaly.

I called Microsoft as they ask in the kb
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;323466 to receive an
update to DSCLIENT for Win 98 and I download it and try it but the problem
still there.

The PDC emulator is available and the Global Catalog server is on site.
WINS avaliable to.
