Hi Group,

I just got online with Pipex Solo 150 (150kps). The first time it connected
ZoneAlarm reported 'drst.exe' wanting to access the internet. A quick
search on Google found insufficient data to satisfy me that this is ok,
although I'm fairly sure it's to do with the SpeedTouch modem.

Anyone know more about this .exe that I've got?

Google for something called Dr.SpeedTouch... and yes, it does come with the
Alcatel USB modem - its a self-diagnostics utility of some sort.

The same thing happened to me - I just got online with Wanadoo
broadband, they supplied a Speedtouch modem and "Dr Speedtouch"
software, which as you say is a small self-checking utility program.
Trouble is, it persistently surfs the internet on its own and sends
large amounts of unknown data out of my computer, even when there's no
reson for it to be active, and I had to instruct my firewall to deny
it access. I have emailed Speedtouch about this but got no reply as
yet. Anyone got any ideas? This is not normal or necessary behaviour
bearing in mind the nature of this program, surely? And the data it
is sending back is big: it's a continuous stream, hundreds of
kilobytes, probably running into hundreds of megabytes if I let it
carry on unchecked.

Anyone from Wanadoo or Speedtouch administration reading this:
comments please???

Re the above: here is the answer from Wanadoo Support. I remain
slightly less than convinced, because this program seems to be taking
an unnecessarily long time testing and is using up significant
bandwidth, but there you are, they say it's harmless so maybe we're
just being paranoid...

"Dear Peter,

Thank you for your email.

Dr Speedtouch sends out information to a server which then relays the
information back to the program to test the network to see if the
connection is working properly. If you would like this program to stop
this then all you need to do is simply un-install it.

I hope this answers your query.

If you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to get in
contact with us again.

Kind Regards

Simon.
